Smith&Smith® Recycling Program
At Smith&Smith® we’re on a mission to continuously reduce the amount of waste we send to landfill by implementing a sustainable recycling program. In 2017 we diverted tonnes of waste from landfill by recycling glass, cardboard, paper and other items used daily in our business.
In 2017 alone, we recycled:
- over 1,000 tonnes of windscreen glass,
- over 8 tonnes of mixed recyclables,
- 100 tonnes of cardboard,
- nearly 3 tonnes of paper and
- over 26 tonnes of plastic bags.
Our glass is recycled into everything from glass jars, beer and wine bottles, glass wool insulation for buildings, pool filters and even sand used for top turf at AMI Stadium and Eden Park. And we’re not done yet, we’re working on expanding the program to include our mobile technicians and our network of authorised dealers.
Some of the over 1,000 tonnes of glass that we recycle goes to the OI Glass factory, right here in Penrose in Auckland, to be made into new glass jars and bottles. Our team got to tour the factory and see the process up front and couldn’t wait to share it. Take a look.
Giving Back Initiatives
At Smith&Smith® giving back to our local community and those less fortunate is important to us. Throughout the year we support The Salvation Army through various giving back initiatives from food, toiletry and clothing collections to fund raising efforts as our chosen charity.
On a global scale we support Afrika Tikkun through the annual Spirit of Belron® Challenge. Afrika Tikkun is a non-profit organisation dedicated to the eradication of poverty by caring for vulnerable children in townships in South Africa.
Their programs address the needs of township children with the end goal being their successful placement in careers or tertiary learning facilities.
Each year Smith&Smith® team members join with their Belron® colleagues from all over the world to fund raise for this worthy cause and to meet for a fun filled 2 day event in the UK to celebrate.
